Abstract:

This paper discusses ancestral genealogies descending from the moon and the sun, as found in the Mahābhārata, the Harivaṃśa, and the Rāmāyaṇa. In particular, the paper explores changes in the way that the ancestry of the Bhārata kings was reckoned, and shows how certain narratives may be understood in terms of those changes.
