Abstract:

CALL is a relatively young discipline and is greatly affected by the consequences of a predominant focus on program development at the expense of basic research. The central issue of this paper involves the integration of research components into the CALL development process for the purpose of not only improving the quality of software but also demonstrating how empirical observations that emerge during the course of development can have an important impact on underlying theory.
