This sūra offers instruction on a variety of topics (e.g. prayer, pilgrimage, and food), and prescribes
punishment for certain offenses (e.g. murder and theft). Several passages condemn various ‘pagan’
practices, but many more are critical of Jewish disobedience and Christian doctrine, and believers are
warned against entering into alliance with the ‘People of the Book.’ Its title refers to the miraculous
‘table’ of food sent down to Jesus and his disciples.
