DOI: 10.1558/equinox.19076

Blurb:

This chapter is developed in three sections. The first section offers a synopsis of the two conceptual maps that hold promise in explaining facework collision in intercultural communication. The second section uses the core taxonomies of the two theoretical frames in analyzing a Japanese–U.S. social interaction episode. The third section provides specific recommendations on future theorising efforts concerning facework expectancies in intercultural social discourse.
