Bernstein possessed a fearless imagination, which for the best part of half a century he devoted, with great originality, to the exploration of a question which has sometimes been described as the fundamental theoretical question of classical sociology: ‘how does the outside become the inside and how does the inside reveal itself and shape the outside?’
