Book: Language, Society and Consciousness
Chapter: 2 Society, Language and Mind: the metadialogism of Basil Bernstein’s theory
This chapter is concerned with a number of questions: What does it take for theories to engage in dialogue? Could any linguistic theory dialogue with Bernstein’s sociology? Could any sociology dialogue with Halliday’s linguistics? If not, how do we explain this selectivity? This chapter is intended as a continuation of reflection on this general problem.
