Book: Two Bold Singermen and the English Folk Revival

Chapter: First Work, First Songs

DOI: 10.1558/equinox.38549

Blurb:

This chapter discusses Harry and Sam’s adolescence and early adulthood, as they moved from school to work and began to extend their activities as singers (and, in Harry’s case, as a fiddler, melodeon player and jig-doll maker), from the home to public spaces including public houses. By the age of 12 both boys were employed. Harry remained in east Norfolk, Sam (nicknamed ‘Funky’ by this time) joined the Yarmouth fishing fleet and spent most of his time at sea.
