Abstract:

The life and writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer have been a great inspiration to many Christians, not least in the ecumenical movement. His works could also be a resource for dialogue between traditional Western Protestant churches and the growing global Pentecostal and Charismatic movement. Walter Hollenweger’s many uses of Bonhoeffer in reflections on the social impact of Pentecostalism provide a starting point to define five theses concerning the charismatic, socio-political, contextual, distinctive and ecumenical qualities of Pentecostalism. Protestant and Pentecostal churches have much to learn from one another, and it is to the detriment of human development that the dialogue between these two traditions has largely been neglected. Hollenweger’s work shows that Bonhoeffer’s theology would be a great place to begin a both critical and sympathetic discussion – and a closer look at Bonhoeffer’s works might reveal more than we find in Hollenweger.
