Abstract:

Although astrology had been a leading academic discipline in the Middle Ages, its former prestige came to a definitive end in 1770 when the University of Zaragoza was the last institution to suspend its study. Condemned both by canonical Christianity and the rising vogue of rationalistic empiricism, astrology faded along with the medieval curricula in general. However, following its earlier initiatives (see the Introduction in this issue), in 2002, the Sophia Trust in Britain sponsored the Sophia Centre for Cultural Astronomy and Astrology at Bath Spa University (at the time, Bath Spa University College). The suspension of any academic investigation of astrology had finally come to an end.
