A highly literate and intellectual director, his early sympathies with the Paris Surrealists and his enthusiasm for the works of Freud and other modern revolutionaries, led him to explore the darker side of bourgeois life. This study closely examines the major films right from the brilliant and scandalous Un Chien Andalou through to the mature but equally damning late films like The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and That Obscure Object of Desire.
