Chapter: 12. The pragmatics of Q&A interactions: Public discourses in Hong Kong

This study investigates discourse and interaction in a broad scope: online public discourse. The challenge of studying public discourse of this nature is that there are two types of competing audience in such interactions. One is the immediate audience such as news reporters in this study. The other is the assumed

audience of the wider world. This study shows the tension between the immediate audience (reporters) and the assumed audience (wide public audience) and the ways in which tension is manifested in the response pattern.
