In this chapter, the author further explore the interaction of the systems of TRANSITIVITY and JUDGEMENT by presenting a parallel analysis of these systems in two topically related texts. Whilst appraisal analysis is often conducted on texts as an end in itself, the author wishes to show the power of combining the two forms of analysis as a basis for understanding texts as registerial varieties, and for exploring their ideological tendencies. The analysis and interpretation of appraisal is presented first, in order to show the results of an analysis based on appraisal alone. Following that, the author sets out my analysis and interpretation of transitivity in order to illustrate the impact that an understanding of experiential meanings has on our interpretation of the appraisal in the text.
