In this chapter, the authors analyse evolving language systems in a corpus of recounts written by Spanish pre-university students of English. Learners’ language, or interlanguage, has been defined by Selinker (1972, 1992) as the result of learners’ attempts to reach the target system as they use the language, that is, while trying to fulfil the experiential and social functions of language. One important area in the study of interlanguage that has not been fully addressed is the question of how language learners acquire the different discourse types, or genres, of the target language.
