Chapter 3 reconstructs village societies by engaging with the archaeology of households, and more broadly with the archaeology of communities, to examine how the social life of villages was mediated by relationships with the landscape they inhabited. The chapter places particular emphasis on the farming productivity of households. The relationship between the inhabitants of these places and the land they farmed was also mediated by a shared identity.
