Book: The Ultimate Guide to Great Reggae

Chapter: Steel Pulse

DOI: 10.1558/equinox.25479

Blurb:

Along with Black Slate and LKJ as backed by Dennis Bovell & The Dub Band, Steel
Pulse is one of the most important reggae bands to come from the UK, and the
most commercially successful of the three. Like the other two bands, Steel Pulse
was comprised of expatriates from Jamaica and from elsewhere in the Caribbean
and British-born members. Like them, they made roots reggae with a slightly
expanded, worldlier sound that was nonetheless genuine reggae. Steel Pulse was
very much part of the live reggae boom of the early 1980s. It was then that they,
Bob Marley (playing what would be his final shows), Peter Tosh, Toots & The Maytals,
Black Uhuru, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Bunny Wailer, Third World, a
reconstituted Skatalites and others criss-crossed the globe, performing reggae for
ecstatic audiences all over the world.
