The main aim of this paper is to examine the notions ‘code’, ‘register’ and ‘social dialect’. Each of these categories is without doubt relevant to the field of sociolinguistics; at the same time, their recognition adds valuable dimensions to theories regarding the nature of language. The examination of these concepts, therefore, raises issues which appear to be of fundamental importance both to sociolinguistics and general linguistics.
