DOI: 10.1558/equinox.27827

This chapter concerns the various aspects that help construct dialect. In addition to the socio-historical and linguistic variables that affect communication across our country, readers are introduced to the complicated nature of our notions of “standard” language vs. “non standard” language. The chapter concludes with a brief discussion of dialects in other languages.
