Book: The Five-Minute Archaeologist in the Southern Levant

Chapter: 44. How do you define ethnicity?

DOI: 10.1558/equinox.27891

Recent studies present ethnicity as a social construct, challenging the interpretation of this aspect of identity from archaeology even when texts are available. A test case for the use of multiple lines of material evidence is presented. The ethnicity of the inhabitants of Tell en-Nasbeh was regional and situational, but influences of the Judean kingdom and Assyrian empire are demonstrated.
