The chapter opens with concepts from pragmatics, which allows analysis of how meaning is created through interaction within a given context, with explanations of and exercises in speech act theory, conversational implicature, politeness, and conversation analysis. Also included are sections on spoken discourse markers, vague language, ellipsis and intonation, features that help us achieve our communicative needs in spoken interactive situations.
