Chapter 4 examines how students can develop and express a sense of identity through writing. There is currently a limited understanding of incorporating digital literacy into the teaching of languages to multilingual (or translingual) speakers, a gap demanding future research and suggesting the need to develop new guidelines for pedagogical methodology. In this chapter, the authors explain how contextual factors (such as linguistic background, dialects, and mixed populations in the same classroom) enrich student writers’ socialization and identity development. After discussing the value of digital literacies in supporting students’ writing practices, the authors examine how teachers’ understanding of literacies influences pedagogical and practical considerations in educational settings.
