Book: Jews

Chapter: 6. Does the Holocaust Make Israel's Existence a Special Case?

DOI: 10.1558/equinox.35987

Blurb:

I am not sure that the Holocaust makes Israel a
special case, but it has certainly had a profound
impact on Zionist ideology. A key element in the
growth of Zionist aspirations was the rise of Nazi
Germany. In the eyes of many Jews the promise
of emancipation and liberation appeared to
be a false hope. With the onset of World War II,
Zionist aspirations intensified despite Arab opposition.
Once images of the concentration camps
were released and news of the destruction of six
million Jews became widely known, world Jewry
united in support for a Jewish homeland.
