Chapter: Bridging by Forms of Repetition

DOI: 10.1558/equinox.36967

Blurb:

Chapter 4 introduces students to forms of bridging devices based on grammatical forms of repetition - exact repetition, slant repetition, and the polyptoton – as well as parallelism, which provides a form of syntactical repetition, and reiteration, perhaps the form of repetition that the book stresses most often. In all instances, the chapter explains the nature and effect of each type of repetition. It also explains the ways in which each can contribute to the creation of structural integrity and coherence of their paragraphs. But the chapter relies mainly on the inclusion of its large number of examples of good practice to illustrate the correct and most constructive use of each form. It also provides discreet exercises after each set of illustrations to enable students to practice emulating professional writers.
