Words hurt and often catch caregivers off-guard when their affected loved ones’ react to them with derogatory remarks and/or inappropriate language. For the individual with Alzheimer’s disease, losing “filters” in their language is part of the the disease progression, and caregivers strive to recognize this and not take remarks personally. Exploring effective ways of finding the root causes of these behaviors and managing them can ease caregiver stress during these verbal attacks.
