Abstract:

The aim of Page's book is to demonstrate how the project of feminist narratology can be improved by adopting a more holistic approach to the kinds of texts studied and the theories used to frame the studies. ‘Feminist narratology’ is an ‘…umbrella term which embraces the exploration of narrative from…’ a feminist point of view (p. 1). Page argues that thus far feminist narratology has largely accepted the assumption of a gender binarism (and argued for a focus on female texts, or a female plot alternative to the ‘male plot’), and overlooked both the role of the reader/interpreter of texts, and, the potential benefit of studying a variety of text types. Thus she argues for a ‘multistranded’ version of postmodern feminist narratology and envisions this as a ‘tapestry’ woven from multiple perspectives and multiple text types.
