'Sanskritization' is a term coined by the reputed Indian anthropologist M. N. Srinivas, initially in his seminal thesis on the Coorgis of South India. Srinivas wanted to challenge the notion that caste is a rigid and inflexible phenomenon and that it has always remained inviolable and accepted in toto by the people in the lower echelons of the caste hierarchy.
