Book: Walking Through Jordan
Chapter: The Khirbat Iskandar Regional Survey: A Preliminary Look
Blurb:
This paper offers a preliminary look at a regional survey conducted in the environs of Khirbat Iskandar, Jordan in 1982. The work followed upon a pilot season of survey and soundings in 1981. The primary goals were to recheck Nelson Glueck’s 1939 survey and to document any additional sites in the area, with a view toward understanding the history of occupation in the Wadi al-Wala basin. Our particular focus was to determine if there were Early Bronze Age sites in the vicinity of Khirbat Iskandar besides the one discovered by Glueck. For comparative purposes, included in the article is a discussion of the 15 sites documented by our team, as well as a summary of Glueck’s work. When placed in the context of surveys in the wider region, the 1982 survey, albeit limited, adds important data about the occupational history of the area, especially for the Early Bronze Age.
