Matthiessen explores translation as a semiotic phenomenon, complementing the approach of studying translation as a cognitive phenomenon. He locates translation within an ordered typology of systems operating in different phenomenal realms, deconstructing the conception of translation in accordance with the architecture of language based on systemic functional theory. He also summarizes the significance of studying translation
empowered by systemic functional linguistics and explores the meta context of translation as a meta-semiotic process.
